In this paper the stability of an umbilical-ROV system under nonlinear oscillations in heave motion is studied using numerical methods. Nonlinear elements are considered in the dynamics. These encompass drag damping and a bilinear restoring force. We focus the analysis on the taut-slack behavior of the ROV and comparisons with existing analyses are made. The study is performed with physical bifurcation variables divided into sets of operation and design parameters. In order to construct stability regions, we developed a procedure based on convergent series for detecting high period solutions and possible routes to chaos. The results show typically transitions from period-1 to chaos through period doubling, but before arriving this last state, period-3 and period doubling of this will occur. The most qualitatively changing regions correspond to length vs. drag coefficient and length vs. frequency.
