Resumen:
This chapter focuses on field research aimed at documenting Chaco languageswith varying degrees of vitality, specifically those spoken in Argentina andin the vicinity of the Argentinian/Paraguayan, Argentinian/Bolivian, andParaguayan/Bolivian borders. The case studies here selected provide anoverview of recent experiences conducted in Chaco within the frameworkof Himmelmann 1998?s foundational program on documentary linguisticsand subsequent publications along these lines. We emphasize the results ofcollaborative research on equal grounds and a discourse-oriented approachto language documentation. Our reflections also highlight the currentthreatening situation of indigenous peoples and their languages and discussthe function of language documentation, preservation, and archiving in thisfragile scenario, with a view to supporting community language use andtransmission as well as ongoing and future research in South America.
