ABEST, the Argentine Bureau for Enhancing Cooperation with the European Community in Science, Technology and Innovation (ABEST) was created in October 2005 , by the National Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, International Cooperation Division (http://www.abest.mincyt.gov.ar ) The aim of ABEST is to improve and expand cooperation activities in the science, technology and innovation area both with the European Union and with its member states For this mean, National Contact Points (NPCs)  were appointed in April 2008 An EU- Latín America workshop was organized in Mexico DF in June 2008. Its goal was to define common research interests and subjects. The Workshop gathered 33 experts (24 from Latin America and 9 from the European Union) around four themes: ·         Metropolis: new forms of social convivence, inclusion / exclusion, mobility and insertion processes, and social violence ·         Rurality: new territorial dynamics, agro-alimentary actors and systems ·         Problems of Democracy: institutional insufficiencies, governability challenges, rol of the economic elites, and organized crime ·         Market: new productive and labour models. The Workshop contributed to define new research subjects for the 2010 Work Program A SICA for Latin America and the Caribbean. Moreover, a Specific Cooperation Intervention Area (SICA) for LAC countries has been included in the 2010 Work Program, with a 2,7 million Euros budget. Also, a research line: “Collective challenges for Latin America and Caribbean countries” was included in the Seventh Frame Program (FP7). One of the criteria is the participation of at least 2 different UE Member States (or associate states) , and 7 LAC countries (at leeast one institution from Argentina, one from Brazil, one from Chile, and one from Mexico Argentina´s SESH National Contact Point participated in the FP7 INFODAY, 8 May 2009 (http://ec.europa.eu/research/iscp/pdf/agenda_infoday_ue_arg.pdf). Some 100 research managers and researchers participated in the FP7 Info Day event opened by Agueda Menvielle, Director International Relations of the Argentinean S&T Ministry (MinCyT) and Cornelia E. Nauen, Sr. Policy Officer of the EC´s Research DG. Presentations on results, experience with past collaborations and upcoming cooperation opportunities followed. The planned future tasks are the following: ·         Identification of EU and Argentine SESH Research Centres, researchers, and projects ·         Informative and training meetings to encourage Argentine  SESH participation in FP7 ·         UE and LAC NCP’s meeting in Buenos, Aires, September 2009 (to be confirmed)
