Resumen:
Patagonia region is considered the last point of colonization of Homo sapiens in its dispersal process into the Americas. Different disciplines have increased the knowledge about settlement patterns of the southernmost hunter-gatherers, their technology development, and their environmental modification and adaptation during the Holocene. However little is known from a genetic perspective about their ancestral origins, biological diversity, migration patterns, kinship relations with other native ancient groups and their continuity with modern populations. To date, the only comprehensive studies of complete ancient mitochondrial DNA genomes (mitogenomes) and genome-wide analysis are restricted to ancient populations from Tierra del Fuego and the Magallanes region of Chile. In this work, we present the first paleogenomics data including human ancient mitogenomes and ancient pathogens identification from 45 terrestrial hunter-gatherer individuals from the Atlantic coast of Central Argentinian Patagonia. The individuals were dated between 6070±80 YBP (middle Holocene) and 310±55 14C YBP.In addition to tacking several research questions based on the paleogenomic genetic data, the presentation will highlighting the local and collaborative Latin-American efforts supporting this investigation. This is relevant considering the surge of aDNA studies in the last decade on Central and South America archaeological remains, most of which do not involve Latin American researchers in the first or last author positions. In an effort to counterbalance this trend, we began an interdisciplinary binational collaboration in 2018 between IDEAus and The International Laboratory for Human Genome Research (LIIGH)- UNAM, Mexico. The interdisciplinary team integrates local experts from Mexico and Argentina in paleogenomics, paleopathology, biological anthropology, bioarcheology, population genetics, bioinformatics, microbiology, and virology. As a result, besides generating cutting-edge knowledge on paleogenomics research, this project will contribute to the training of new local scientists in this discipline, who will continue to expand the field in situ and halt the need of excessive extraction of ancient samples by larger aDNA research groups in Europe or USA. Furthermore, we hope to set an example and show that horizontal collaborations between Latin American researchers can be established to generate high-quality knowledge in the field of paleogenomics, which in turn is a medium to protect sovereignty over our archaeological remains, and make paleogenomics research more sustainable and ethical.
