Lakes are particularly vulnerable to environmental changesand thus considered sentinels and integrators of processes that occur in theatmosphere and terrestrial environments. Ecosystemic up to individual metabolic pathways and nutrient cycling inlakes respond to both natural and human disturbances. Disentangling the effectof such different forces is a particular challenge for lake ecological studies.One possible solution is experimental ecology which was successfully applied inparticular cases. Here we will discuss how biological variables respond todifferent natural events such as volcanic eruptions (local impact) and glacierrecession (global warming) in deep glacial Andean lakes. These two events havea high preservation potential in the paleolimnological record. We will presentthe combination of observational and experimental research, including newmolecular methods, that contributed to understanding the effects of theseexternal forces on aquatic ecosystems. Both events involved severe changes inparticle input to the aquatic environment, and affected plankton parameters(bacteria, algae, protists and zooplankton) that resulted in differences in thelacustrine ecological functioning.
