Abstract. This essay discusses critically Fredrik Barth’s approach to the problem of ethnicity bearing in mind a comprehensive analysis of his works. In order to achieve this goal, certain pervasive ideas which appear both in his theoretical and ethnographical writings are discussed. The article analyses the interpretative role of  the ecologic and demographic factors in the ethnicity model, the importance of the relative identity theory, the genealogy of Barth’s theoretical influences in his explanation of social facts and the problem of the rational agent as the cornerstone of his interactive view of social relationships.
