In the year 2017, a mutant strain of bacteria, capable of surviving the full range of the seasons -including the harshest winters and fearful storms-, has polluted the fresh water of all South America, creating chaos and poverty. Water Thieves is the first middle-grade novel written by V. L. Perillo. This book was written as part of an outreach program for the project "Sensing the Americas´ Freshwater Ecosystem Risk from Climate Change" (SAFER), funded by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the US National Science Foundation (NSF). All sales of this book will go back into the project and be used to keep funding outreach activities of the SAFER project as well as to buy more books to distribute to schools and libraries
