Resumen:
Baccharis ulicina Hook. & Arn. or "yerba de la oveja" is a perennial herb not consumed by cattle, that has become a major weed in livestock systems in the semi-arid zone of Argentina. The aim of this study was to register quantitative data for interpreting the growth of B. ulicina under field conditions. In plots located in Carmen de Patagones and Bahía Blanca were made holes where polyethylene bags with the same soil were placed in order to contain plant roots. Then, after 30 days of growing under greenhouse conditions, one plant of B. ulicina was transplanted to each bag. Monthly, seven plants were harvested in each site during a year, and dry weight of leaves, stems and roots was measured. Regressions were performed for each site and absolute growth rate (AGR) was calculated every months. Growth of all parameters in Carmen de Patagones was lower than Bahia Blanca at the end of the growth cycle. The mean of the total dry weight was 3.24 g in Carmen de Patagones and 5.62 g in Bahia Blanca at the end of the growth cycle. In November, the highest AGR of plants were obtained, while negative rates were recorded in the months of the most unfavorable temperatures. This information has a great practical value, months with the highest plant growth would be the most appropriate to apply systemic herbicides which are currently the most widely used management tool.
