Resumen:
The objectives of this article are to report the finding of Sabethes purpureus in tree holes both in urban and forest environments in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, Salta province, Argentina and to provide information on these larval habitat characteristics. Tree holes were sampled monthly from January to April of 2011, and from January to March of 2012 and 2013 in sidewalks, public access areas and in three sites within forested areas outside the city, selected along an urban gradient in Orán. Sa. purpureus was most frequently found in low numbers and with other mosquito species. Larvae and pupae were detected in urban and forested areas; a higher proportion of tree holes were positive for Sa. purpureus immature in the urban compared to the forest environment, while no significant differences in abundances or densities per hole were detected. Overall, more immature were collected in holes with higher water volume. To our best knowledge, this paper reports the species for the first time breeding in an urban environment. Its presence in Orán, Salta province, extends its geographical distribution from the Atlantic and Paranaense forests to the yungas in northwest in Argentina.
