Resumen:
A cross was performed among the cultivar “Caimanta” of L. esculentum and the accession LA722 of L. pimpinellifolium and in the F2 generation a divergent - antagonic selection for the fruit’s weight and the fruit’s shelf life was begun. Fruit shelf life trait showed transgressive segregation in the F2 generation. The selection process was continued until the F6 generation and it was found that response to selection was only significant for fruit weight. At the end of this selection process seventeen recombinant lines (RILs) were analyzed for both traits. Nine of these RILs were obtained by the selection process, and the other eight were obtained only by selfing from the same F2 generation. Highly significant differences were found among these RILs for both traits. Random drift was as important as the selection process to produce differences between these genotypes. This experiment have shown that wild species give to tomato breeders another possibility to enhance the genetic variability for fruit shelf life and fruit weight in tomato germplasm.
