Ion Irradiation Induced Phase Transformations In beta Cu-Zn-Al Single Crystals.

Abstract−− Single crystals of β-Cu-Zn-Alalloys were irradiated with 30 keV Ar+ ions atroom temperature to fluences in the range of 1to 6 displacements per atom (dpa). Themicrostructural changes induced by theirradiation were investigated with transmissionelectron microscopy. Specimens with twodifferent surface orientations, (100)β and (011)β,were studied. In specimens with (100)β surfaceorientation a new phase with a hexagonal closepacked structure was formed due to the ionirradiation. The orientation relationship withthe matrix was of the type:(0001)Hex || (0 1 1)β ; [11 0 0]Hex ||  βIn specimens with (011)β surface orientation, thehexagonal structure was not observed. Instead,small precipitates of the γ phase with a meansize of 8 nm were found. The results arediscussed in comparison with previous ionirradiation experiments and with similar phasetransformations occurring in β Cu-Zn-Al alloys.
