Resumen:
In her paper ?On the Conversational Basis of Some Presuppositions?, Mandy Simons (2001) offers a very interesting view on linguistic presuppositions. Basically, her main claim is that some presuppositions are conversationally generated inferences. She then suggests a tentative conversational principle that might be responsible for the phenomenon of presupposition. She immediately notices some problems with the principle but argues that her proposal might indicate the route to go. The goal of my paper is to take up Simons? challenge. First, I will offer an explanation of why her principle does not work. Specifically, I will argue that the proposed principle blurs the distinction between assertions and presuppositions. Second, I will try to show that if we take into account this distinction, we can construct a first modified version of Simons? principle that overcomes previous problems. However, the first modified version will be shown to face other problems. Finally, a tentative second version will be advanced to try to account with all the phenomena but avoiding problems.
