REPRODUCTIVE TOXICITY OF Tessaria absinthioides (HOOK AND ARN) DC IN MICEPenas V, Rinaldini E, Persia A, Gamarra-Luques C, Hapon MB. Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales. UNCuyo. IMBECU CCT Mendoza CONICET email:(bhapon@mendoza-conicet.gob.ar)Tessaria absinthioides (Ta) is currently named ?pájaro bobo? ?suncho negro? or ?brea?. It is an aromatic plant commonly used as medicine and as spices or seasonings through Argentina and Chile territories. Its infusions have been employed since Aymara and Huarpe folk Medicine as hypocholesterolemic, balsamic, spectorant, for hepatitis, renal insuficiency, diabetes and ?empacho?. Scientifically its virucidal activity, anti-inflamatory effects, insecticidal and gastric cytoprotective activity have been reported. Recently, our laboratory reported its cytotoxic effect against human tumoral cell lines, its in vivo antitumoral effect in mice, and reported no acute nor dose repeated toxicity by oral administration of the aqueous extract. The aim of this study was to determine the potencial female reproductive toxicity, prenatal and postnatal exposure of Ta aqueous extract. The study was performed by daily oral administration of 300 mg/animal on female BALB/c mice throughout estrous cycle, gestation and lactation (n=8 per group). Our results demonstrate that Ta administration does not affect estrous cycle (5 days), sexual receptivity (90%), fertility (90%), length of gestation (Co=20 days vs. Ta=20.43 ± 0.2 days), number of pups per litter (Co=6.33 ± 0.9 vs. Ta=7 ± 1.2) or pup growth during lactation (Co=9.57 ± 0.16 vs. Ta=9.133± 0.22 gr/pup). All the parameters studied were statistically not significant (p>0.05). During the study no toxic effect was determine on dams or pups. The present data, demonstrate that Ta aqueous extract can be administered safely during critical physiological stages in the female like gestation and lactation with no risk of prenatal or postnatal toxicity on the pups. The current study support the ethnopharmacological consume of the infusion and make this plant eligible for further scientifical studies related to its phytomedical properties.ParámetroControl Tessaria absinthioidesNúmero de días del ciclo estral5.1 ± 0.1 (n=9)5.1 ± 0.1 (n=9)Tasa de receptividad sexual 0.9 ± 0.07 (n=10)0.9 ± 0.07 (n=10)Tasa de fertilidad0.9 ± 0.1 (n=10)0.8 ± 0.13 (n=10)
