Pierre Bezukhov Becomes (Really) Russian: Some Issues of National Identity in Tolstoys Narrative and Life Experience, revista Fragmentos - Revista de Língua e Literatura Estrangeiras (Florianopolis, Brasil), no. 38, 2010, pp. 59-69. ISSN 2175 7992. (Aparecido en 2013) This article seeks to analyze the weight and effects of the Westerngaze (France?s in particular) in Tolstoy?s own life experience, and how itaffected his literary production. The psychology of stigma provides someinteresting insights as to how French opinions about Russia may haveaffected Tolstoy?s identity as a Russian, thus conditioning his choice of?identities? for the characters of some of his novels (for example, that ofPierre Bezukhov in War and Peace).
