Resumen:
Paleoecological, geological and archaeological studies suggest different environmentaland cultural changes during the Holocene in Southern Patagonia. This review compares peatbog and archeological pollen and charcoal records and establishes some hypothetical linkageswith the current archeological information for the southwestern Patagonia. During the earlyHolocene, steppe communities dominated the extra-Andean landscapes. Nothofagus forestcolonized the western areas during the early Holocene, then, open forest established up to theearly middle Holocene. During the middle Holocene, dense forest suggesting humid conditionscharacterized Andean landscapes meanwhile the extra-Andean region showed drier conditionsthan during the early Holocene. The late Holocene showed drier conditions in the Andeanregion meanwhile steppe environment showed the opposite signal. Vegetation changes at alandscape and local scale were driven by changes in westerlies position and intensity. Extra-Andean archaeological evidences seem to be synchronous with wet periods inferred bymesophytic steppe vegetation dominance. Bloque 1-Oquedad, Chorrillo Malo 2 and Cerro León3 archaeological sites provides valuable complementary information for paleovegetation andpaleoenvironmental reconstruction.
