Resumen:
Burkholderia sp. (AU4i) is a beneficial strainpreviously isolated from the pea rhizosphere. Inthe present work, we demonstrated that AU4i isalso able to grow endophytically on A. thaliana, promoting plant growth as evidenced by anincrement in plant fresh weight, the length ofprincipal roots as well as the number of lateralroots. Direct contact between plant and AU4i isrequired to increase root length, ruling out thepossibility that these effects are provoked byvolatile or diffusible compounds. In addition, weevaluated the transcription of plant cell wallmetabolism and defense genes during thisendophytic interaction. Our analysis showed theinduction of a gene coding for a pectin-methylesterase enzyme, as well as the jasmonate (JA)responsive gene PDF1.2. By contrast, theexpression of PR1, a key component of thesalicylic acid signaling was not modulated. Thedegree and pattern of methyl esterification andhormone signaling activation affects cell wallstructure and properties with consequences onpathogens resistance, suggesting that AU4icould be used as a biocontrol agent. As a whole,AU4i causes a variety of beneficial effects in A.thaliana, provably modifying its cell wallmetabolism and inducing the JA defensesignaling pathway.
