Resumen:
In this paper we analyse the implementation of the finite element method to simulate the structural behaviour of the generating-wagons of variable-geometry oval-trajectory (VGOT) Darrieus turbines. The key feature of a VGOT machine is that each blade, instead of rotating around a central vertical axis, slides over rails mounted on a wagon. Every wagon contains its own electrical generation system coupled to the wheels and the electricity is collected by a classical third rail system. Each blade is mounted on a chassis supported by standard train boogies. The chassis is formed by a tubular reticulated structure. Because the aerodynamic loads, the weight of the components and the centrifugal acceleration in the curved tracks, the suspension of each generating element should be designed so that it absorbs the efforts in the vertical and traverse directions of the railroad. The aerodynamic loads were previously calculated with a Double-Multiple Streamtube Model, and the suspension is modelled by one-dimensional two-node bar elements that would represent its behaviour in the presence of irregularities on the railroad. Then we have the boundary conditions constrained by imposing the displacements on the ends of the bar elements. A pseudo-code diagram of the entire set of sub-routines used in this model is shown.
