Resumen:
Minthostachys verticillata, is an autochthone medicinal plant and our research group have demonstrated that their essential oil (EO) has the ability to modulate the immune response. The aim of this work was to evaluate whether EO modulates the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines in bovine mammary gland epithelial cells (MAC-T) in the presence or absence of a Staphylococcus aureus strain (Sa) isolated from cows with mastitis. The cells were treated with EO (25, 50 and 100 µg/mL), Sa (5x106 CFU/mL) and pretreated with EO and then challenged with Sa at different times (2, 6, 24 and 48 h). Cells without stimulation were used as control. IL-1β and IL-6 cytokines were quantified in the cell supernatant by sandwich ELISA. MAC-T cells stimulated with Sa produced higher levels of IL-1β and IL-6 than untreated cells (p
