Resumen:
This paper deals with the question about which are the sorts of hindrances by which freedom is compromised. Republicanism defends the merits of its conception of freedom as non-domination based on its capacity to explain why our freedom is compromised when our options can be shaped by an uncontrolled power. Neorepublicans specify what means to be subject to an uncontrolled power- to be dominated-. Philip Pettit argues that only the uncontrolled interference, invigilation and intimidation performed by an agent counts as hindrances that compromise freedom. In the first part of the paper, I will show that this conception of domination is too narrow to explain all the relevant factors that compromise freedom. I will argue that if we conceive freedom as non-domination as a robust good, we have to consider the creation of option for non-compliers as a factor that also compromises freedom.
