Resumen:
This study developed and tested a path analysis model to explain the relationships between ideology, religiosity and attitudes toward legal abortion in Argentina, proposing some innovations on a theoretical model developed by Lista (1996). Through data obtained by a questionnaire of 450 inhabitants from Cordoba, Argentina, selected by a PPS sampling, we tested typical measures of religiosity and its effects on attitudes toward legal abortion (ALA). Even if people who have lower levels of religiosity (in typical religious measures) show greater approval of legal abortion, moderate but significant indirect effects have also been found between religiosity and attitudes toward legal abortion mediated by lower levels of personal orthodoxy, lower trust in religious institutions and more inclusive perceptions of being a Catholic. Results suggested that a growing questioning of the Catholic Church as a moral regulator with an impact on the country´s politics decision makers, allow a more complete understanding of the relationship between religiosity and ALA in Argentina.
