Resumen:
Mitochondria are organelles that regulate both survival and cell death. They are involved in thegeneration of ATP, lipid metabolism, calcium homeostasis, apoptosis and cell differentiation, among other processes. Molecular motors play relevant roles on the regulation of mitochondriasize and shape, essential properties for the cell homeostasis. In this work, we tracked single rod-shaped mitochondria with nanometer precision to explore the performance of microtubule motorteams during processive anterograde and retrograde transport. We analyzed simultaneously theorganelle size and verified that mitochondria retracted during retrograde transport with theirleading tip moving slower in comparison with the rear tip. In contrast, mitochondria preservedtheir size during anterograde runs indicating a different performance of plus-end directed teams. These results were interpreted in terms of a stochastic numerical model that considers the actionof motor motors that anchor at different regions of a flexible organelle. Our results contribute to abetter understanding of the mechanisms involved in the organization of mitochondria in cells.
