Descripción:
The evolution of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) into High Luminosity-LHC (HL-LHC) presents different challenges, among them, the upgrade of the power converters associated to the inner triplet magnets to reach the 18 kA required. In order to decrease the power interface requirements and to avoid strong network disturbances, the use of an Energy Storage System (ESS) is foreseen. Moreover, redundancy to accomplish the stringent requirements associated to this kind of applications, even under the failure of a module, and modularity to reach the high current required is expected. Consequently, the development of a 18 kA power converter built from N parallel-connected sub-converters having M modules inside and with integrated ESS is carried out. This report presents the first set of experimental results on the power stage. The aim is to validate the thermal response of the approach adopted, the strategy for power busbars and dc-link sizing and some functional aspects like current sharing. The amount informed in the technical report accounts for the first payment of the second stage in the R & D agreement "Study of Power Converter Topologies suitable for HL-LHC Inner Triplet magnets with Energy Recovery".
