Effects of embodiment on declarative memory reconsolidation

Consolidated memories can return to a labile state after the presentation of a memory-cue (reminder) of the original information involving a re-stabilization process known as reconsolidation (Nader 2000). It allows the modification of stored information:strengthening (memory accuracy and persistence, Lee 2008; Forcato et. al 2011; 2013), impairment (Walker et al 2003) or incorporation of new information into the reactivated memory (Hupbach et al. 2007, Forcato et al. 2010). It has been suggested that reconsolidation can also be modulated by motor action (Van Dam et al. 2013).The present study aimed to investigate whether motor action reinforces episodic memory during reconsolidation, increasing its accuracy and persistence. The results will be discussed in relation to embodiment theory (Barsalou, 2008; Glenberg, 1997).
