Resumen:
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have garnered interest in regenerative medicine as well as cell carriers for therapeutic genes in cancer. MSCs have the ability to migrate towards inflamed or tumorigenic sites, but the mechanisms involved in MSCs recruitment into gastrointestinal carcinomas (GIC) are not fully understood. In this chapter, signals derived from GIC microenvironment and its influence on MSCs tropism and tumor recruitment are described, as well as the potential role of MSCs on tumor growth. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved in MSCs recruitment to GIC is needed and will help in the design of better strategies to increase their ability to target GIC in cell-based gene therapy protocols.
