Abstract?This paper deals with the wind speed estimation forcontrolling WECS. A wind energy conversion system driven by aBDFIG generator is described. A "Second Order Sliding Mode"observer is proposed for estimation of the aerodynamic torque. Aconvex optimization algorithm is used for estimate wind speed.The generator torque and the wind speed estimation are used forgenerating a combined error tracking that provides damping to aWECS powered by BDFIG. Control of the generator is realizedthrough the PI strategy for reducing shaft fatigue. The results areanalyzed via simulations.
