Resumen:
In the last decades, women'sparticipation in science has increased significantly, even reaching apparentparity in some countries such as Argentina. However, measuring gender bias is acomplex subject and when digging deeply into scientometric parameters, genderinequalities become evident. In this work, we analyzed women's representativityand visibility in Herpetology, the scientific study of reptiles and amphibians.We examined around 7000 records about four aspects of academic participation:articles authorship in Journals from four quartiles according to the SClmago rank,and a non-ranked journal, participation as chairs and editorial boards inherpetological journals, and participation in scientific societies andmeetings. We used descriptive statistics and network analyses. Our resultsshowed that women represented 30.3% of all authors in journals of herpetology,holding the position of last author -a position usually occupied bylab-leaders- in just one of four articles. Female representation in editorialboards was only 19%. The co-authorship networks analyses carried out for twoSouth American journals showed that female authors were below equalrepresentation (46.8% and 36.2%, respectively) and the gender of the firstauthor had a significant influence on the number of female authors. Further,although female members of the Argentine Association of Herpetology are themajority, only one woman has presided the society in its 38 years of existence.In the annual congresses organized by this association, women had equalparticipation than men but were 2.4 times less invited than them to speak inmain conferences. These results show the underrepresentation of women inleadership and decision- making positions in Herpetology, in congruence withwhat is observed in other scientific areas. A correct understanding of the genderinequalities inside specific scientific areas is necessary to propose actionsand policies directed to overcome the inequalities.@font-face{font-family:"Cambria Math";panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4;mso-font-charset:0;mso-generic-font-family:roman;mso-font-pitch:variable;mso-font-signature:-536870145 1107305727 0 0 415 0;}@font-face{font-family:Calibri;panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;mso-font-charset:0;mso-generic-font-family:swiss;mso-font-pitch:variable;mso-font-signature:-536859905 -1073732485 9 0 511 0;}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal{mso-style-unhide:no;mso-style-qformat:yes;mso-style-parent:"";margin:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:widow-orphan;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;}.MsoChpDefault{mso-style-type:export-only;mso-default-props:yes;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;mso-fareast-language:EN-US;}div.WordSection1{page:WordSection1;}
