Resumen:
Landfill liners are composite barriers designed to contain, transport and pump leachate. However, physical changes and chemical reactions are usually neglected. Steel slag is a byproduct of steel manufacturing which raises an important environmental concern due to the high volume of generation and, specially, its basicity. Its physicochemical behavior and composition depends on the steelmaking process.Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag is mainly used as flux in steel production, concrete and asphalt production and the construction of road grades and sub-grades. Additionally, successful results have recently been obtained in wastewater treatment, iron recovery, CO2 sequestration, and as fertilizer.
