Resumen:
The relationship between left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and blood pressure (BP) has been described. In this sense male rats , eigth weeks old , from a group of Wistar (W)(n=22) , Wistar Kioto (WKY)(n=15) and SHR (n=57) were studied. The SHR group was divided in a)SHR1 (BP<130)(n=10) and  b)SHR2 (PS>130)(n=47). Ecocardiography and systolic BP (SBP) (tail cuff method) in awake animals were recorded. Ecocardiographic determinations including left ventricular mass (VM) and relative thickness (RT) were obtained. Results: The body weigth (BW) in gr in W was 316±13 ( p<0.05) vs. WKY 259±6.07 vs.  SHR1 273±6.33 and vs. SHR2 274±3.6. The SBP(mmHg) was in SHR2 (144±1.9)(p<0.05) vs. SHR1 121.7±2.2, vs WKY 113.7±3.66, and vs W 122.5±2.39. The ecocardiographic determination showed an increment in septal and posterior wall thickness and a reduction in dyastolic diameter in both SHR groups. The VM/BW   was similar in the four groups .On the other hand RT, shows a significant differences between groups (W: 0.34±0.01 vs WKY 0.44±0.02 vs SHR2 0.52±.01 vs SHR1 0.55±0.02). The left ventricular contractile function did not show any significant difference between groups. Conclusions: The developement of left ventricular hypertrophy and remodeling could progress independtly of blood pressure increment  suggesting  either  genetic or hormonal factors.
