sucrose-sweet cola drinking resulted in loss of β cell function and depletion of insulin content.Treatment had no effect on either proliferation or apoptosis in β cells.Activation of dedifferentiation or trans-differentation mechanisms mightaccount for the loss of β cells. Oxidative stressis likely involved assuggested by increased expression of thioredoxins and low circulating levels ofCoQ10. Results support a glucotoxic effect of sucrose-sweet coladrinking in rat pancreas.
