Lipid profile and plasma antioxidant status in sweet carbonated beverage-induced metabolic syndrome in rat

Resumen:
The rising consumption of soft drinks has been linked to metabolic syndrome in humans. However, in spite of experimental data with fructose-enriched diets, little is known on the effects of cola beverage in man or in animal models. Oxidative stress is involved in the pathophysiology and cardiovascular complications of metabolic syndrome [1]. In order to assess the effects of prolonged consumption of cola beverage on oxidative metabolism indicators in plasma, 48 maleWistar ratswere randomly divided into 3 groups and allowed to drink light (L6), regular (C6) cola beverage or tap water (W6) ad libitum. After 6 months, all groups switched to tap water drinking for the following 6 months (wash-out) to complete 12 months (W12, L12, and C12). Plasma concentrations of antioxidants á-tocopherol and ubiquinone-10 (CoQ10) [2] and glucose, triglycerides, and total- and HDL-cholesterol (CoQ10) [2] and glucose, triglycerides, and total- and HDL-cholesterol (CoQ10) [2] and glucose, triglycerides, and total- and HDL-cholesterol concentrations of antioxidants á-tocopherol and ubiquinone-10 (CoQ10) [2] and glucose, triglycerides, and total- and HDL-cholesterol (CoQ10) [2] and glucose, triglycerides, and total- and HDL-cholesterol (CoQ10) [2] and glucose, triglycerides, and total- and HDL-cholesterol concentrations of antioxidants á-tocopherol and ubiquinone-10 (CoQ10) [2] and glucose, triglycerides, and total- and HDL-cholesterol (CoQ10) [2] and glucose, triglycerides, and total- and HDL-cholesterol (CoQ10) [2] and glucose, triglycerides, and total- and HDL-cholesterol all groups switched to tap water drinking for the following 6 months (wash-out) to complete 12 months (W12, L12, and C12).
