Background: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which include ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn´s disease (CD), are chronic and relapsing intestinal inflammatory disorders. Galectin-1 (Gal-1), a lectin with anti-inflammatory properties has been implicated in several immunopathologies. In this study we investigated the role of this lectin in the colonic mucosa of IBD patients.Methods: Intestinal specimens from control (HC) (n=), UC (n=) and CD patients (n=) were studied by RT-qPCR, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry and ELISA for Gal-1 production, and flow cytometry for detection of Gal-1 specific membrane ligands in lamina propria T cells (LPTC). Finally, Gal-1 functional assays were performed by flow cytometry (Annexin V) and TUNEL assay.RESULTS: We found that despite the increase of Gal-1 gene expression detected in colonic inflamed areas (p
