Resumen:
Galectins (Gal) are glycan-binding proteins that have been implicated in several pathologic and physiologic processes. It has been described key roles in the regulation of the immune system. Inflammatory bowl diseases (IBD) are a group inflammatory disorders that mainly affect the gastrointestinal tract and constitute a chronic and relapsing condition. IBD are characterized by two forms of intestinal inflammation: Crohn´s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). It has been accepted that the mucosal immune dysfunction is central in the pathogenesis, and thet T cells are mainly implicated. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of Gal-1 in this inflammatory setting, that mainly affects the colon of patients with UC and CD.
