Resumen:
Kidneys play a key role in glucose homeostasis. During hyperglycemia a feature of diabetes mellitus, renal glucose handling isaltered which in turn leads to an alteration in water transport. Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) is a water channel strongly expressed in proximal tubules. Although 2/3 of filtered water is reabsorbed in the proximal tubule AQP1 expression in diabetic kidneys and its possible role inthe alteration of water transport are unknown. Thus we decided to study if AQP1 expression in diabetic kidneys. Diabetes was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats after intraperitoneal injection of 65 mg/kg Streptozotocin (STZ). Studies were carried out at 15 days and 5 months post injection.15 days post STZ injection rats presented normal glomerular filtration rate (creatinine clearance 2.3 ml/min ± 0.16 vs 1.9 ml/min ± 0.15 n=6) and no proteinuria. Histological observation revealed no morphological alterations. We considered 15 days post STZ injection representative of early diabetes where there hyperglycemia without renal damage is found. In these rats AQP1 expression significantly increased in the diabetic group (100 vs 198 ± 28, n=3 p
