Resumen:
Preeclampsia superimposed on chronic hypertension is diagnosed when a woman with pre-existing hypertension develops systemic features of preeclampsia, after 20 weeks gestation. Its incidence varies among different populations and hospitals, but it has estimated that up to 5% of pregnancies are affected. OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence and the pregnancy records in women who developed Preeclampsia and superimposed Preeclampsia and to analyze the complications associated with both pathological conditions. METHODS: A descriptive, quantitative and retrospective chart review was conducted on all the pregnancies with Preeclampsia and superimposed Preeclampsia attended at the Hospital Posadas during 2010. RESULTS: A total of 4845 births were attended at the Hospital Posadas during 2010. The occurrence of self-reported chronic hypertension in the anamnesis was 5.31%. Among the 4587 normotensive women, 83 developed preeclampsia (1.81%), while 28 (10.85%) of 258 hypertensive gestant had superimposed preeclampsia (incidence=0.58%). The relative risk of preeclampsia for hypertensive pregnant women is 6,00 (3,98-9,03)(p
