According to intracrinology, active sex steroid hormones can be locally synthesized from their precursor Dehydroepiandrostenedione (DHEA). In vascular system sex hormones regulate cell migration, proliferation, production of nitric oxide (NO) and adhesion of plate lets (PT) and monocytes to endothelial cells (EC). We evaluated the effect of DHEA on these events and evaluated if they were assessed by DHEA, or if conversion to other sex steroids is required. Primary cultures of rat aortic EC were obtained from Wistar rats and exposed to DHEA (20nM-2mM 0.5-48h). DHEA stimulated NO production (Griess reaction 0.17±0.02; 0.24±0.04; nmols NO/mg prot, Cont; DHEA p
