Mechanical evaluation of biodegradable medical implants

Implantable metallic biomedical devices are currently used to promote the bone healing process. However, they should be removed after bone healing due to probable host tissue adverse response or mechanical incompatibilities. On the other hand, bipolymeric implants represent a viable alternative, not requiring the removal surgery due to the resorption process. In the present work, the mechanical performance of a PLA-based maxillofacial impant system was investigated.
