Resumen:
In contrast with plant sources, Gluconacetobacter xylinus produces cellulose with a nanofiber architecture and particular properties such as high purity (absence of lignin or hemicellulose), mechanical strength, crystallinity, water-holding capacity and surface/volume ratio, as well as renewable origin, biodegradability and biocompatibility, among others. For large scale production purposes, non conventional low cost substrates need to be used. In the current work, chosen fermentation conditions were evaluated in order to improve the bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) production when glycerol from biodiesel was used as a cheap C source.
