Resumen:
The purpose of this study is to examine the addition of an anionic polyacrilamide polymer to natural clay and a clay-sand mixture for the possible use in landfill systems. The polymer interacts both with fine soil (clay) and granular soil (sand) generating particles aggregation with a small amount of polymer addition. The polymer reduces the micro porosity and changes the water retention capacity of the soil-polymer mixture. The swelling potential, swelling pressure and compression strength were measured. The results are presented in terms of the variation of the index properties, the effects of the polymer in the potential expansion of the soil samples, the relationship of suction-degree of saturation and unconfined compression strength. The hydraulic and mechanical behaviour of clay-polymer and sand-clay-polymer mixtures present significant changes due to polymer addition.
