Resumen:
Admixtures are polymers added to the cementpaste, mortar or concrete mixture to optimize some specific property. They canaccelerate o decelerate the cement paste hydration, make it more fluid with alow water to cement ratio, make it more viscous or more cohesive, depending onthe polymer added and its interaction with the cement paste. They can be bioadmixtures or synthetic admixtures. In many applications, bio admixturescompete in the market with the synthetic ones, but in some applications, suchas water retention agents and viscosity modifying agents, they areindispensable.Biopolymers are environmentally friendlypolymers which are used as admixture for modifying their hydration. Severalpolymers, used as admixtures, are available for the construction materialindustry. In the present review, cellulose ethers, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), hydroxyethylmethyl cellulose(HEMC), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), chitosan, Diutan gum, Welan gum and Xanthan, Lignosulfonates, starch and nano/microcellulose were included. Theeffects of each biopolymer in the cement mixture were explained. Biopolymers are environmentally friendlypolymers which are used as admixture for modifying their hydration.
