Adhesion of serum albumin is a key phenomenon to determine the degree of hemocompatibility of a material. Adhesion of a layer of albumin will passivate the material surface avoiding blood clot formation and platelets activation and then define it as a hemocompatible material. Adhesion is strongly related to the free surface energy and the interaction potentials between a material surface and the albumin molecule in water. The X-DLVO theory is employed to calculate the van der Waals and acid base interaction potential for TiO2 nanofilms produced by the sol-gel method, with an albumin molecule in water. The resultant value of the interaction potential for TiO2 was compared with the calculated values obtained applying the same theory, for pyrolytic carbon and 316L stainless steel. It was found that the acid-base potential was dominant in the interaction potential for the three materials.
