Resumen:
The fragmentation of natural environments, involving changes in landscape configuration and habitat quality, is an important threat to biodiversity. The South American Atlantic Forest has been highly fragmented, which imperils its biodiversity. We evaluated the effects of forest loss and fragmentation on its mammal assemblage in Argentina. We surveyed mammal assemblages with camera-traps. We used GIS to evaluate the effect of the area and isolation of the fragments, and of the quality of the environment surrounding them (e.g., % of forest). Mammal richness increased with the proportion of forest surrounding the fragments and decreased with the distance to population sources. Small fragments surrounded by contrasting land-uses (e.g., annual crops) had a higher proportion of generalist species. We will use this information to estimate friction grids to develop connectivity models for sensitive mammal species. These models can be used as spatially explicit planning tools for the conservation of the mammal assemblage.
