A new species of Scinax Wagler (Anura, Hylidae) from Central Brazil.

The neotropical hylid genus Scinax Wagler comprises two large clades, the S. catharinae and the S. ruber clades. The S. ruber clade is the most species rich including 67 species distributed from Mexico to Central Argentina, including Trinidad and Tobago, and St. Lucia. The study of specimens collected in Central Brazil at the Cerrado Domain lead to the discovery of a new species of the S. ruber clade that is characterized by SVL 29.4?35.4 mm in males, and 35.7 mm in females; vocal sac single, median, subgular, and that ventrally does not reach the pectoral region; dorsum with a background brownish dark or whitish gray with some scattered round, irregular and elongate dark blotches; hidden surfaces of thigh and shank dark brown with large and diffuse light blotches; and nuptial pad that covers the medial margin of metacarpal II, and obscures the posterior portion and the outer margin of the inner metacarpal tubercle. The new species occurs near the headwaters of permanent or temporary streams, where males call from vegetation or rocks at the margins of small streams.
