ABSTRACT Addition of steel fibers in concrete has technical and economic influences in the construction process and structural behavior. In civil engineering, these fibers are used in concrete pipes to transport non-pressurized fluids. Consequently, international standards of steel fiber-reinforced concrete pipes have been generated. The use of fibers as reinforcement can replace partially or completely the traditional steel reinforcement. This fact minimizes handling and mounting of the reinforcements bars. Thus, concrete separations and concrete covers are ensured. Turbo-vibration and turbo-compression systems in the manufacture of tubes with fibers are feasible. With these systems, the fibers are oriented predominantly parallel to the tensile flow, therefore the structural performance is improved, fissures are controlled, and ductility, tightness and durability are increased. This paper shows the experimental results of a study in precast concrete pipes. An agreement between a precast pipes company and the Faculty of Engineering in Olavarria, Argentina, helped to carry out this study. Several concrete pipes of 0.60 m of diameter tested using fiber fractions in between 25 and 30 kg/m3. Diametral compression test were carried out to analyze these pipes at the Faculty Structures Laboratory. Results of process technology and the structural performance are shown in the present paper. The results confirm that the substitution of traditional reinforcement by fiber reinforcement is a viable solution for the manufacturing of concrete pipes.
