The biologicalnitrogen fixation carriedoutbysomeBacteriaandArchaeaisoneofthemostattractive alternativestosyntheticnitrogenfertilizers.Inthisstudywecomparedtheeffectofcontrollingthe maximum activationstateofthe Azotobacter vinelandii glutamine synthasebyapointmutationatthe activesite(D49Smutation)andimpairingtheammonium-dependenthomeostaticcontrolofnitrogen- fixation genesexpressionbythe ΔnifL mutation onammoniumreleasebythecells.Strainsbearing the singleD49Smutationweremoreefficient ammoniumproducersundercarbon/energylimiting conditions andsustainedmicroalgaegrowthattheexpenseofatmosphericN2 in syntheticmicroalgae? bacteria consortia.Ammoniumdeliverybythedifferentstrainshadimplicationsforthemicroalga´s cell-size distribution.Itwasuncoveredanextensivecrossregulationbetweennitrogen fixation and assimilation thatextendscurrentknowledgeonthiskeymetabolicpathwayandmightrepresent valuablehintsforfurtherimprovementsofversatileN2-fixing microbial-cellfactories.
