Resumen:
AGONISM MANAGEMENT THROUGH AGONISTIC VOCAL SIGNALING IN SUBTERRANEAN RODENTS: A NEGLECTED FACTOR FACILITATING SOCIAL CONDITION?The correlation between social structure and communicative complexityin rodents is an important topic considering repertoire and sociality evolution. In social subterranean rodents, as the number of animals in the same burrow increases, so do inter-individual contact rates because of limitations in tunnel length and diameter, leading to an increase in the number of agonistic situations. Thus, social species are expected to increase the number of agonistic vocalizations. Comparison of adult vocal repertoire of 12 species (7 genera) through regression and PIC suggests that: 1) number and categories of vocal signals is higher in social species in relation to solitary species; 2) number of agonistic vocalizations is higher in social species; 3) the percentage of agonistic vocalizations in relation to total repertoire is similar between social and solitary species. These results imply that agonistic vocalizations have increased in number thus maintaining the same proportion in both solitary and social organisms? repertoires, suggesting that communicative changes, especially at the level of agonistic signals, could be a necessary condition towards group living.
