Resumen:
We investigated the ability of attenuated strains of S. enteritidis with different protective capacities to induce intestinal inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and apoptosis in Peyer´s patches (PP) in mice.  Results showed that attenuated E/1/3 strain induced iNOS and apoptosis within few hours  after inoculation. These events seemed to correlate with the protective capacity of this mutant.  Furthermore, nonprotective mutant C/2/2 induced neither intestinal NOS nor apoptosis in PP.  Moreover, AG treatment at the time of immunization completely abolished protection induced by mutant E/1/3. Our results suggest that NO is involved in the very early phases of the immune response against S. enteritidis.
