Resumen:
Rheumatological diseases and periodontal disease (PD) are both characterized by impairment of the host inflammatory response. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disorder that primarily affects the axial skeleton and adjacent structures. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) is chronic inflammatory arthritis starting at enthesis/bone sites presenting with various clinical phenotypes. The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate the possible relationship between periodontitis and AS; and/or PsA.Sixty-eight adults with AS (50 men and 18 women); 47 adults with PsA (21 men and 26 women); and 68 and 47 age- and gender-balanced systemically healthy control subjects participated in each study. Participants´ periodontal status as determined by probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss, plaque index and the gingival index was evaluated and classified in mild, moderate and severe periodontitis. The ratio men/women for AS group was 2,8:1; and for PsA group was 0,8:1. For AS Group: 16,2%, 42.6%, 29,4% and 11.8%, and AS Control group: 29,3%, 46,2%, 18,4% and 6,1%; % corresponded to patients without PD and with mild, moderate and severe PD, respectively. For SpA group: 6,4%, 31.9%, 29.8% and 31.9%; and SpA control group: 14,8%, 52,3%, 24,6 and 7,1% corresponded to patients without PD and with mild, moderate and severe PD, respectively. The presence of PD and, the frequency of moderate and severe periodontitis of the AS group and the PsA group were significantly higher than those of their respective control group, (p < 0.01). Conclusion: preliminary results indicate that periodontal evaluation must be considered when AS or PsA is diagnosed.
