Resumen:
Abstract: Combined Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are mainly added to infant formula to promote the prevalence of a microbiota composition similar to that resulting from breast-fed infants. Their efficacy evaluated in paediatric population had methodological limitations and their mechanisms are still under debate. According to our knowledge they are not experimental studies during the high growth period in order to determine the potential bone health benefits of the consumption of GOS/FOS containing infant formula. The present study comparatively explored the effects of feeding two similar infant formulas one containing 5.3% of GOS/FOS (D+) and the second without them (D-) vs. the rodents recommended diet (AIN93) in rats from weaning to 40 days of age. At weaning male Wistar rats (40-47 g) received either AIN93-G diet or D+ and D- formulae for 3 weeks (ws). Changes in body weight rate (BWR) and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) content (log CFU/g feces in MRS agar) were evaluated. At sacrifice, caecal pH, total skeleton bone mineral content (teBMC/BW) and density (teBMD) (Lunar DXA), and femur BMD (fBMD) and weight (FW) were also evaluated. Results (mean±SD) are in table 1.
