Resumen:
Dr.Daniel Klionsky has been the leader in the molecular analysis of selectivemacroautophagy, the process by which cells, including those in our own bodies, eliminate parts of themselves that are no longer working or are notneeded, through self-eating.  Dr.Klionsky?s group established the molecular model to enable the selectivetargeting of substrates for autophagy.  Thismodel remains the best-defined model for selective autophagy and also for abiosynthetic use of this primarily degradative process. The Klionsky labprovided the first molecular demonstration that mitochondria can be degraded ina selective manner, and the first example of endoplasmic reticulumstress-induced autophagy. Dr.Klionsky?s lab also published the first paper using zebrafish as a model systemto study autophagy. His research accomplishments have been recognized through aJohn Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (1997), his appointment asa Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2009), hisbeing named a Thompson Reuters Citation Laureate (2013), and his receipt of thevan Deenen Medal (2015). At present, he has published over 150 peer-reviewedresearch papers, and over 180 review papers. Dr.Klionsky has been instrumental in leading the autophagy community. He was thevice chair and chair of the 1st and 2nd Gordon ResearchConferences on Autophagy (2003, 2005), and a co-chair of the 1stKeystone Symposium on Autophagy (2007). In 2003, he authored the paper thatestablish the autophagy-related (ATG) nomenclature. He edited the first bookfocused on autophagy (2004), and the first Methodsin Enzymology series devoted to this topic (2008). In 2005, he became thefounding editor-in-chief of the journal Autophagy. Inaddition to research, Dr. Klionsky has been recognized for hisdedication to teaching. In 2003 Dr. Klionsky became the first biologist to winthe National Science Foundation Director?s Award for Distinguished TeachingScholars, which recognizes excellence in both research and teaching. In 2006,he was named an Education Mentor in the Life Sciences by the National Academyfor Sciences, and that same year he became the director for a Howard HughesMedical Institute?Undergraduate Science Education Program. Dr. Klionsky haspublished 21 pedagogical papers and has been a leader in the biology field inpromoting active learning. OurSchool of Pharmacy and Biochemistry pioneered the organization of internationalmeetings on autophagy in Latin America. Since the first ?BuenosAires Research Conference on Autophagy? organized in 2011, thestudy of this subject has grown significantly in our Country and in Latin-America.Wehad the honor of counting with Dr. Klionsky?s presence as the keynote speakerin 2013 Conference on Autophagy.  Dr.Klionsky has inspired several PhD students, who had the privilege of meeting Danduring his visit in 2013 and they are now young researchers interestedin autophagy, its mechanisms and functions. Weare grateful to Dr. Klionsky for his intellectual leadership and generosity.  Dan,Thank you very much.<!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face{font-family:"Cambria Math";panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4;mso-font-charset:0;mso-generic-font-family:roman;mso-font-pitch:variable;mso-font-signature:-536870145 1107305727 0 0 415 0;}@font-face{font-family:Calibri;panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;mso-font-charset:0;mso-generic-font-family:swiss;mso-font-pitch:variable;mso-font-signature:-536859905 -1073732485 9 0 511 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal{mso-style-unhide:no;mso-style-qformat:yes;mso-style-parent:"";margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:widow-orphan;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;}.MsoChpDefault{mso-style-type:export-only;mso-default-props:yes;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri;mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;}@page WordSection1{size:8.5in 11.0in;margin:1.0in 1.0in 1.0in 1.0in;mso-header-margin:.5in;mso-footer-margin:.5in;mso-paper-source:0;}div.WordSection1{page:WordSection1;}-->
