Resumen:
An increase in mtNOS would be involved in myocardial acclimatization to hypobaric hypoxia through the effect of NO on mitochondrial function. Considering that brain is particularly sensitive to oxygen deficiency, mitochondrial function in brain cortex and hippocampus was evaluated in rats submitted to 5000 m simulated altitude (53.8 kPa = 404 mmHg) for 1 month (HH) and in their controls (C) at ambient atmospheric pressure (101.3 kPa = 760 mmHg). Oxygen consumption, measured with a high resolution respirometer, was in hippocampus (natg/min.mg protein): C 10.3  0.1 and HH 5.5  0.5 in state 4 (p
